Monthly Poem: September/October

ree

Hit 'em low, hit 'em high.

If you didn't know before, here is the checkpoint for you: I am a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan. Have been since 2005.

Jalen Hurts is my QB1 and I'll stand behind him as he leads us wherever.

So I decided to start the NFL season with a poem about him. Simple as that. Using some quotes of his too. Hopefully you can relate to feeling this way about someone you are a fan of.

Everybody Hates Jalen.

(After Jalen Hurts)

They cookin’ you in the quote RT’s, Jalen.

Talking ‘bout “you either win or learn”, well they tired of learning, Jalen.

They want wins, Jalen.

Talking bout, “keep the main thing, the main thing” and how the “rent is due every day”,

they callin’ like you ain’t never sent in a check, Jalen.

As if now it’s too easy to intercept Jalen,

“That fumble cost us a ring, Jalen”,

“Ain’t nothing to be happy about, why you on that Christmas album tryna sing, Jalen?”,

“What happened to ‘keep the main thing, the main thing’, Jalen?”

Well, I’m a learner. A passionate fireball.

So, I, too “didn’t walk through all that fire just to smell the smoke.”

I, too, try to “never get too high, never get too low”

but when I watch you on that field,

in your purpose,

before their opinions of you,

I can’t help but be enthused, Jalen

To cheer like I’m on the field with you, Jalen.

To be head high when life kicks down, Jalen.

To say, “You gon’ get us another ring, Jalen.”

And harmonize with you when you sing, Jalen.

Your purpose is more than this game, Jalen.

About the poem:

This is the first draft of " Everybody Hates Jalen.", written at about midday on April 24th.

I've been a diehard Eagles since 2005. It was love at first sight, tbh. The uniforms were wavy. The fan culture was something I was already proud to start connecting with as a young pre-teen. Then you have McNabb, Westbrook, B Dawk, Trotter Sr., Lito, TO, and the rest of that team.

I've also been through the Chip Kelly Show... so yeah... Basically 20 years of bleeding green and "Fly Eagles Fly", pushing through it all.

Seeing what this team is now? Damn, right I'mma ride for #1 and whoever is rallying around him because he clearly is invested in what being a Philadelphia Eagle is and puts his heart on that field.

This poem is a testament to that. That although I may share some frustrations, I'm still loudly saying "Go Birds" in New England town.

Oh, and of course, the title of this poem is a play on the (classic) sitcom, "Everybody Hates Chris".
